The front door clicked shut, and Clara immediately felt her shoulders relax. A silent whoosh of air escaped her lungs. She looked around the apartment, a slow smile forming on her face. The idea of a pet, especially a demanding puppy, had been circling her mind, and that circling had stopped.

She wandered into the kitchen, humming softly. The countertop was clean, the sink empty. The thought of the mess and chaos vanished. She opened the fridge, grabbing a bottle of water.

The silence of the apartment was a soothing balm. She could finally have her peace. She sat down at the table, taking a sip of the cold liquid. It was a good thing.
