“Grandpa, what’s that?” Maya asked, pointing at the worn, yellowed envelope clutched in her grandfather’s hand. He hadn't spoken about his past in years. He simply shrugged, then slowly, deliberately, began to read. He'd been hunched over, looking older than his eighty years. As he finished the letter, a change came over him. His shoulders straightened, his posture shifting almost imperceptibly. He took a deep breath, and a faint smile touched his lips. He finally looked up at Maya, and his eyes, usually clouded with something she couldn't name, were clear.
