The buffet table seemed miles away. David felt as though he were wading through treacle. Across the room, amidst the floral arrangements, stood Sarah. He’d known they’d both be here. They’d both been friends with the bride for years. The thought hadn't truly sunk in until he actually saw her.

He watched her interact with other guests, her easy smile lighting up her face. He remembered the way he had dismissed her feelings, the thoughtlessness with which he had ended things. He had been so young, so arrogant.

His appetite vanished. He picked at a shrimp skewer, the bland taste doing nothing to alleviate the internal turmoil. He wished he could go back, rewrite their history. He wished he could apologize for all the ways he had failed her.
