The biography landed on his doorstep like a physical manifestation of his worst fears. The title, *The Hidden Life of Arthur Finch*, was a cruel joke. Arthur had dedicated his life to being a nobody. He wanted no fame, no notoriety, no attention.

He picked up the book and threw it in the trash. But the image of the cover, the portrait of himself staring back, lingered. He retrieved the book. He sat, staring at it for hours, his hands clenched into fists.

He went to the mirror, examining his reflection, trying to understand how this had happened. He wanted to erase himself, to vanish. A feeling of profound isolation settled over him.
