The professor’s words, a monotone drone, blurred into oblivion. It was hard to focus on the lecture about the French Revolution when his own personal revolution had just imploded. Marcus scribbled furiously in his notebook, but the words were meaningless, a meaningless distraction.

He felt a deep, almost paralyzing sense of futility. He'd sacrificed so much. Part-time jobs, limited social life, everything to chase a dream that was now crumbling before his eyes.

He imagined the smug satisfaction of his parents. This was their fault, their refusal to support him. He felt his jaw clench, his knuckles white against the pen. The only thing he could focus on was his growing rage.
