The email notification had been sitting in David’s inbox for a week. He hadn’t dared open it. Now, finally, he did. He clicked on the link. The home he had grown up in now displayed professionally taken pictures.

His chest felt tight. He had moved out years ago. His parents had both passed. He knew the house would be sold. The photos made everything too real. The memory of his dad's workshop, the living room where they watched football. The images flooded his head like a dam bursting.

He leaned back in his chair, feeling utterly spent. It all seemed so far away, a faded dream he couldn’t quite grasp. He had no control over it. He’d never had any, really.
