The air in the house was thick with unspoken words. John had been snapping at his wife all morning, the smallest things setting him off. His leg jiggled constantly beneath the kitchen table. He was jumpy, irritable. He needed to be outside, to be somewhere, anywhere, else.

He walked to the window, finally deciding he needed to go out for a drive. A gust of wind blew across his face.

The absence of his car hit him hard. A sudden, cold shock swept through him as his eyes fell on the empty space. Rage, sharp and immediate, replaced the simmering frustration. He slammed the door, the sound echoing the turmoil inside him.
