The silence of the library was almost unbearable. Michael sat at the table, the magazine open in front of him. The words blurred before his eyes. It wasn't just anger, he felt a deeper, hollow ache. He felt disconnected, adrift. His hand clenched into a fist. He felt this strange weight on his chest.

He abruptly closed the magazine. He had to do something. He stood and walked purposefully towards the exit. The city beckoned. He needed to lose himself in the crowd, to forget, even for a moment. He walked on quickly and steadily.
