The seaside air whipped at his hair, carrying the salty tang of the ocean and the distant cries of gulls. He stood on the pier, his gaze fixed on the horizon, searching for something he couldn't name. He'd booked a trip to the coast after seeing a picture of Emily on social media. She had been his best friend, his confidant, his partner in crime during childhood. He had made a new life, and was now a stranger. He saw her, laughing with a group of friends. He went towards her. "Emily?" His voice sounded thin against the roar of the waves. She turned, her eyes narrowed in confusion. "Do I know you?" He looked back at the ocean, a cold numbness settling over him.
