“Did you hear about The Cozy Corner?” Mark asked, his voice low. Sarah looked up from her paperwork, her face suddenly pale. He’d delivered the news with a strange hesitancy.

“Closing?” Sarah repeated, her voice thin. She felt a wave of nausea, like the elevator was dropping. Her stomach churned.

She couldn’t believe it. It was where she and her husband, David, had their first date. She remembered their laughter. It now felt a million years ago.

Later, she found herself staring at the photo they took that night, a lump forming in her throat. The vibrant colors of the picture seemed to be fading into dull sepia tones.
