The key slid easily into the lock, just as it had for his grandmother. John took a long, slow breath as he opened the door and stepped inside. He set his bag down near the door and closed his eyes.

He listened to the silence, broken only by the gentle ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. He felt the tension melt away from his shoulders. He liked this.

He started up the staircase, slowly, taking his time. He reached his old bedroom and walked inside. The sunlight was already streaming in through the window, illuminating the dust motes. He leaned against the closed door, and smiled.
