The familiar weight of the steering wheel felt reassuring as Liam drove down the winding coastal road. The salty air whipped through the open windows, and the rhythmic crash of the waves against the cliffs provided a soundtrack to his thoughts. He loved this drive, this routine. He parked and checked his phone. The DNA results had finally come in. He’d signed up for the test almost on a whim. He scrolled through the report, scanning names. He felt detached. He closed the app, and went for a long walk on the beach, the sand cold and firm beneath his feet. The ocean stretched to the horizon, a constant, predictable presence.
