The news of the delay sent a ripple of discontent through the waiting area. Emily, however, felt a gentle warmth spread through her. The time was hers, in a way it rarely was.

She was expected to be at a friend’s engagement party, one she felt obligated to attend. The pressure to socialize, the superficial conversations - it was a welcome reprieve to not be there.

She settled back in her seat, feeling the soft fabric of the cushion against her back. She’d brought a new book, the kind she could easily lose herself in. Time stretched out before her, an expanse of possibilities.
