Rain hammered against the awning of the bakery as Maya crouched down, retrieving the discarded wallet. The weight in her hands, she estimated, was enough to pay off a good chunk of her student loans. An exhilarating tingle shot up her spine. She imagined the relief, the freedom. She could practically taste it.

She marched inside, her boots clicking on the wet pavement. “Large cappuccino,” she said to the barista, her voice ringing with a newfound authority she hadn't known she possessed. She knew the location of the nearest police station. Of course, she'd do the right thing. Later. Right now, the warmth of the coffee, the prospect of the money, filled her.

She’d earned this moment.
