The aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air as Martha surveyed her creation: the "PerfectBrew," an intelligent coffee maker that customized the brew according to individual taste profiles. A warm flush spread over her face as she looked at it. She knew it was genius. It had to be.

The Patent Office’s sterile environment did not faze her. She marched towards the counter, her stride firm and purposeful. She ignored the other applicants; their projects couldn't possibly be on the same level.

The examiner's face was a study in polite pity. "Ms. Bellweather," he began, "I regret to inform you that a device with similar functionalities, called the 'Barista Bot,' was patented a few weeks ago."

Martha's shoulders slumped. She wanted to argue, to insist her design was unique, but the words caught in her throat.
