The patent office doors opened before him as if by command. He did not bother waiting in line, simply striding directly to the front.

"Mr. Sterling, it seems that there's already a patent filed for a similar product," said the clerk, her tone level.

His jaw tightened. "Preposterous," he countered, pushing the document across the table. But as the examiner began to point out the similarities, his chest grew heavy. He began to argue, but the words felt hollow and lacked any genuine conviction.
