The old oak tree’s roots had shifted the earth, revealing the time capsule. Daniel stared at it, a cold, unfamiliar fear gripping him. He felt a prickling sensation in his skin. He hadn't planned this digging. The box, made of some kind of composite material, was a perfect rectangle.

Inside, a single journal, bound in leather. He opened it, his hands shaking slightly. The first entry was dated years ago, and detailed all his ambitions and fears, written in his own, forgotten hand. He felt a lump rise in his throat, and the words on the page began to blur, making it difficult to read. He felt exposed, stripped of some inner resilience.
