He didn’t know why he’d come. Curiosity? Sentimentality? Whatever the reason, he was here, standing across the street as the wrecking ball swung. His stomach lurched with each impact, a physical manifestation of the memories being crushed. The wood splintered and shattered. The walls caved in.

He'd tried to prepare himself. He'd told himself it was just a building, that it was silly to feel anything. But as the roof collapsed, a sob escaped his lips. He turned away, unable to watch any longer. The ground seemed to tilt beneath his feet. He had to lean against a tree to steady himself.
