He stared at the email, the stark black text mocking him. Daniel found himself unable to breathe properly. A tightness constricted his chest, and he felt a cold sweat prickle his skin. He pushed away from his desk, the chair scraping loudly against the floor.

He needed to get out. He grabbed his jacket, fumbling with the zipper. The office, usually a place of familiarity, now felt like a cage. He rushed down the hallway, not acknowledging anyone, not even offering a glance.

He needed fresh air, to escape the suffocating feeling that had consumed him. The announcement had ripped away the ground beneath his feet, and he was falling, falling.
