He folded the letter meticulously, the action precise, almost ritualistic. Then, he placed it back inside the envelope, sealing it with a practiced hand. He stood very still, his back straight, his eyes fixed on a point in the middle distance. The sounds of the city, usually a comforting backdrop to his life, now seemed to mock his equilibrium.

He slowly walked to the refrigerator, opened it, and stared blankly at the contents. He wasn’t hungry. He wasn’t thirsty. He closed the door. He felt a knot in his stomach, a physical representation of the knot in his future. He felt trapped in his own body.
