Mark saw Chloe the instant he entered the reception hall. His breath hitched, a silent gasp trapped in his chest. She was talking animatedly with someone he didn't know, her hair pulled back in a style he always loved. She looked radiant.

He stopped, feet rooted to the spot, a sudden weight pressing down on him. The cheerful music, the chatter of the guests, all faded into a dull, indistinguishable hum. He felt as if the air had become incredibly thin, making each breath a laborious effort.

He wanted to turn and run, to pretend he hadn't seen her. But his feet were anchored, and all he could do was stand and watch, paralyzed by the sight of her.
