Gemotions

The car keys clattered on the countertop. She, Olivia, turned. Her husband, Ben, was halfway out the door, phone pressed to his ear. He saw her and stopped, his expression guarded. The door was ajar. She heard a woman's voice, soft and low.

Olivia's breath caught in her chest. She couldn't breathe. Her hands felt clammy.

Ben hung up, his face a mask. "I... I have to go," he said, avoiding her eyes.

Olivia watched him leave, her legs suddenly leaden. The world outside seemed to tilt on its axis. She felt a profound emptiness, a void opening up inside of her.
