Her blood ran cold. The comfortable familiarity of the dorm room evaporated as she saw her roommate, Maria, casually poring over the pages of her journal. The air was thick, oppressive. She felt physically ill.

She felt a sharp stab of something akin to panic. The urge to flee, to hide, was nearly overwhelming. Her hands clenched into fists, her fingernails biting into her palms. Her eyes darted around the room, as if searching for an escape.

Maria looked up, a look of mild surprise on her face. "Oh, hey. Sorry, I was just… bored." The explanation was as empty as the space inside her heart at that moment.
