The small coffee shop's open mic night was usually a haven of awkward amateurism. David, however, was struck motionless. A young woman was on stage, singing *his* song. A song he'd written during a dark period of his life, a song he never shared with anyone.

He felt an unsettling tremor. He struggled to breathe, watching the singer’s face. She was singing with an ease he'd never felt. Each note hit him with a physical force.

He bolted from his chair, almost tripping. He had to get out, away from the music, away from the intrusion. His heart hammered in his chest.
