"Impossible," Clara muttered, the test results crumpled in her fist. She paced her apartment, a whirlwind of disbelief. She knew her family history. She knew it intimately. Her great-grandparents had come to this country on a boat. Her grandparents lived through the war. Her parents had struggled to make ends meet. The thought that she might not be related to them... it felt like a violation.

She stared at the photograph on her desk. A smiling picture of her, her parents, and her younger brother. Suddenly, the image didn't feel the same. She felt a growing distance from it.

Her phone buzzed. Her sister, asking if she’d seen the results. Clara ignored it. She needed time to process this. She needed to think. She sank into her armchair, feeling a strange mix of betrayal and unease.
