The hum of the refrigerator was a lullaby, and Maria felt that it was calling her back to her bed. She fought the impulse, forcing herself to focus on the simple task of making breakfast. A long night of insomnia had left her feeling drained.

Then, a sudden, piercing noise ripped through the morning calm. Her husband, David, rushed in, his face a picture of alarm. "The car!" he exclaimed, gesturing wildly towards the window. Maria followed his gaze, her jaw dropping. The space where their sedan had been was now empty. A wave of confusion, heavy and slow-moving, enveloped her. "But… how?" she whispered, the words barely audible. The world seemed to tilt on its axis.
