The anticipation had turned to a numbing fatigue. As he listened to the presentation, Robert’s eyelids felt like lead weights. He willed them to stay open, struggling to absorb the information being presented. He felt his head droop.

He shifted in his chair, trying to find a more comfortable position. The room seemed to blur, the voices of his colleagues fading in and out. The air felt stuffy. His chest felt heavy, as if a large rock had settled there.

He fought to remain alert. He had to show them how dedicated he was to this job. He needed this promotion. But he didn’t know how much longer he could stay awake. He wanted to go home.
