The weight of the afternoon sun settled on Rowan. His sister, Willow, practically buzzed with anticipation. Their great-aunt’s will was to be read. Rowan felt a deep and pervasive weariness.

The solicitor, a stout woman with a severe bun, cleared her throat. “To Willow,” she announced, “I leave my extensive jewelry collection, including the legendary ‘Serpent’s Eye’ diamond necklace.” Willow gasped, her eyes wide with delight.

“And to Rowan… my entire library, comprising thousands of books, many of them first editions, and my old writing desk.” Rowan looked at the library and felt like he'd need an age to get up the energy to look inside.
