The morning stretched before Arthur like a damp, wrinkled sheet. He sighed, the sound barely disturbing the stale air in his tiny apartment. The announcement from the building management was still buzzing in his ears. "Condo conversion." Just the thought of it made him want to burrow deeper under the covers. He dragged himself out of bed, each movement feeling like wading through thick, cold honey. The coffee maker, usually a source of morning joy, seemed to sneer at him.

He shuffled to the window, the blinds still down. The city outside, usually a vibrant hum, appeared muted, the sounds distant and unclear, like he was hearing them through layers of cotton. He felt a deep weariness pulling at him, a profound lack of energy that settled in his bones. He knew he should start packing, preparing for the inevitable, but the task seemed insurmountable, a colossal mountain in a wasteland of exhaustion.

He flicked the kettle on and leaned heavily against the counter, the warm steam a fleeting comfort against the pervasive chill.
