The sunlight poured into Ben's apartment, a stark contrast to the dimness within. He blinked, the bright light stinging his eyes. The news of the condo conversion felt like a punch to the gut, leaving him winded and depleted. He’d always loved this place, the old creaky floors, the crooked walls. It felt like home. He tried to get out of bed, but his muscles felt like they were filled with sand. He managed to stumble to the bathroom, where he stared at his reflection, a stranger staring back. He needed to get moving, to start the arduous search for a new dwelling. He needed a fresh start. But the motivation was gone, evaporated into thin air.
