The air in the house was thick with unspoken words. He ran his hand over the list again. "Learn to cook." He hadn't been patient enough, and had told her she'd be better off not making a mess of the kitchen.

Now, he looked around at the kitchen, the appliances feeling alien, unfamiliar. He opened a cookbook, but the pages swam before his eyes. He had the opportunity and he had let it go.

A sudden, sharp pain lanced through him. He sank into a chair, the weight of his actions settling upon him like a shroud.
