The rhythmic clatter of dishes, usually a mundane sound, vibrated through her. She followed the sound and peeked into the kitchen. Her partner was there, meticulously washing dishes. He was humming, a low, melodic tune she didn't recognize. The language? Japanese.

She leaned against the doorway, watching him. His back was to her. The way his shoulders moved in time with the song, the focused set of his jaw, was mesmerizing. His dedication to learning something so important to her was enthralling.

He turned, startled, a wide smile spreading across his face. “Oh, hey. Just…practicing.” He flushed with a hint of embarrassment. His eyes met hers, and a spark, bright and unexpected, ignited between them. She knew exactly what she wanted to do.
