The phone vibrated on the table, another email notification. Sarah ignored it. The notification was a reminder of the condo conversion. She let out a long, slow sigh, the air escaping her lungs with a quiet hiss. Her apartment, her sanctuary, now felt tainted, an obstacle to her life.

She picked up her phone, intending to call her friend, but then put it back down. The effort of explaining, of reliving the feeling of helplessness, was exhausting. She wandered around her living room, aimless. The ticking of the clock felt amplified, each tick a reminder of the passing time, and a deepening feeling of uncertainty.

She rubbed her temples, trying to massage away the tension that was building, and let out another sigh. The thought of starting over, of finding a new place, of the unknown, was unbearable.
