The air in the apartment felt thick, heavy with unspoken words. The phone calls, always whispered, always secretive, had finally begun to take their toll. Alex was getting tired of them. He had seen the way Ethan clutched the phone to his chest, the way he would move away from Alex to take them.

He knew what he needed to do. He went to the kitchen and grabbed a beer. He cracked it open and took a long swig. He went back to the living room and turned up the television. The volume was loud. Much louder than usual.

He sat back on the couch, the cold beer numbing his thoughts. He didn't say a word. He didn't look at Ethan.
