The email landed with a thud in Amelia's inbox, just another piece of corporate fluff. "Potential Acquisition," it read, buried under a mountain of spreadsheets and budget reports. She clicked the delete button, her jaw clenched. Nonsense. This place, *her* place, wouldn't be changing.

Her fingers flew across the keyboard, composing a scathing rebuttal to a client's unreasonable demands. The draft email was sharp, precise, a verbal slap to the face. She saved it, but didn't send. She wouldn't let this acquisition scare her into being more agreeable.

Later that day, the HR manager announced a company-wide meeting. Amelia skipped it, choosing instead to meticulously organize her desk, filing documents, sharpening pencils, and rearranging her coffee mugs. The announcement was just a formality anyway, she reasoned, a blip on the radar.
