From the moment she'd found out, Clara had felt a tightening in her chest. She refused to open the link, not even a peek. It was about her, but it was not for her. A small part of her almost wished the essay would disappear into the digital ether. She knew it was a prestigious honor. It meant her work was valued. But, standing in the cold hallway, her arms crossed, she felt a profound resistance. She knew all the things the admissions committee would say she did well. She knew all the things her teachers said she did wrong. She would not, under any circumstances, let anyone in. Especially not today. She walked toward the elevator. The lobby was full of other people. She needed air.
