The email notification on Leo's phone was the last straw. Another update from the homeowner's association regarding the fence project. He deleted it without reading it. His mouth was set in a tight, unyielding line. His neighbor, Janet, had been so cheerful about it, oblivious, it seemed, to his feelings.

He tossed his phone onto the couch, the sound echoing in the otherwise silent apartment. His gaze drifted to the window, where the sun cast long shadows across the street. He didn't want to talk, he didn't want to explain. He felt a deep, unyielding weariness.
