Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windows as Amelia reached for the mail. She flipped through the usual bills and junk, then paused. Nestled between a credit card offer and a utility statement was a card. A plain, cream-colored card, with no return address. Her brow furrowed. She turned it over and over.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she opened it. Inside, in elegant, looping script, were the words "Happy Birthday." Nothing more. She bit her lip, a wave of… *something* washing over her. She knew no one who used that particular stationery. Where had this come from?

A sudden lightness in her chest warred with a prickling sensation at the back of her neck. She looked out the window, as if expecting to see someone watching her. The wind howled, and the trees swayed menacingly. She carefully placed the card on the kitchen counter, and found herself reaching for the phone.
