He’d forgotten. Completely. It was his own birthday, and he’d blanked. James felt a flush climb his neck as he sorted through the mail. Junk, bills, a flyer for a new gym. Then, wedged in between, a card. Unsigned.

His hand stilled. The envelope was a cheap, generic one, but the paper inside was high quality, the design featuring a watercolor of a lavender field. Inside was a simple message: "Wishing you the best." He blinked, and reread it.

A peculiar sensation bubbled up inside him. He felt… bewildered. Had his sister pulled a prank? No, she’d be far more boisterous. He ran a hand through his hair, a knot forming in his stomach. He didn’t recognize the handwriting. It didn't look familiar at all.

He scanned the street, peering through his curtains. Nobody. He closed the blinds, suddenly wanting to be invisible. He wanted an explanation, immediately. He didn't have one.
