Gemotions

The morning sun cast long shadows across the porch as Sarah retrieved the mail. She was expecting nothing but a bank statement, so her focus was elsewhere – on the grocery list she’d been composing in her head. A small, unassuming envelope lay amongst the usual clutter.

She picked it up. No name. No address. Just her name, written in a shaky hand. A jolt, like static electricity, ran through her. She tore it open. "Happy Birthday, Love." That was all.

Her breath caught in her throat. She gripped the envelope tightly. Who? The words reverberated in her mind. Her gaze darted around, searching. Her family was all present. Her best friend had texted her to remind her to pick her up to go out for lunch.

She felt a chill, despite the warm spring air. A tremor started in her fingers. She couldn't stop the thoughts from racing through her head. Where had it come from? Who knew her birthday?
