The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to mock Ben. His hands felt clammy. He saw the salary information, leaked accidentally by a careless coworker. The newcomer, Kevin, was making a significant amount more than he was, despite having a fraction of his experience.

He felt the familiar burn of frustration. But seeing Kevin’s face, eager and wide-eyed in a team meeting, something in Ben shifted. He recalled his own early struggles, the steep learning curve, the confusion.

“Kevin,” Ben said as he walked past his desk later, “Want help on that report? I know some tricks to make it easier. And if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.”
