He found the package on his desk when he got home from work. It was addressed to “Ms. Jessica Lane,” a name he knew from the mail that occasionally arrived, a woman who had lived here before he'd moved in. He knew she had a dog.

He took the package home. It was covered in paw prints. It was addressed from a veterinarian clinic. The weight was familiar.

He opened the package, his hands slightly trembling. Inside was a small urn. He stared at it, the reality hitting him. He set it on the kitchen table and went to the window, staring at the street below. He had a headache.
