The notification fluttered out of Professor Davies's office, a single sheet of paper with her name. Olivia had been ecstatic when she’d received the scholarship. Now, it was being rescinded. The error was a student with a similar last name and a far greater need.

Olivia felt her face get hot. She envisioned the other student, perhaps a shy first-year, possibly struggling. She could almost feel their desperation, their relief when they received the email.

She immediately sat down and composed an email to the scholarship committee. She wanted to know more about the situation, not to protest, but to inquire about the possibility of fundraising. It was the least she could do. Her own future seemed suddenly less important than the thought of another person’s.
