“Oh, God, no.” That's all I thought as I saw her walking toward me. My body went rigid. I felt my face flush crimson and my hands start to tremble. Every happy memory, every shared joke, every tear shed, all swirled in my memory.

I fumbled with my clutch, my fingers clumsy and uncoordinated. I felt a rising tide of panic. My breath became shallow and rapid, and I felt a desperate urge to bolt.

“Hey,” she said, her voice surprisingly gentle. My throat closed, and I could only manage a weak nod in response. I wished the floor would open up and swallow me whole.
