The musty scent of old paper and forgotten secrets choked Elara as she forced the heavy oak door of the solicitor’s office wider. Her breath hitched in her chest. A tremor ran through her hands as she clutched the worn leather satchel. Inside, the will of her late grandmother lay waiting.

Her brother, Liam, sat across from the solicitor, a placid mask on his face. He looked at ease, a stark contrast to the way Elara's pulse hammered against her ribs. The solicitor cleared his throat, adjusting his spectacles. “As you both know, your grandmother’s estate is to be divided equally.”

Liam nodded, his eyes flitting to the solicitor with casual interest. Elara squeezed her eyes shut for a moment. She didn’t know why, but the words felt like they were coming from underwater. The solicitor reached for a thick envelope. “This is for you, Miss Elara.” He slid it across the table.

Her fingers danced over the sealed edge, afraid to break the seal. The solicitor turned to Liam. “And for you, Mr. Liam.” He passed him a similar envelope. Liam opened his with nonchalant grace. Elara fought down the urge to bolt from the room. A chill swept through her body.
