"You painted that?" The question, asked by a burly man with a shaven head and a complex tattoo across his bicep, startled David. He’d been lost in his thoughts, surveying the exhibition of his works. The man pointed to a canvas depicting a snarling wolf.

David nodded, suddenly feeling self-conscious. The man smiled. "Awesome. Best piece I’ve seen in a while." He revealed the wolf, now permanently inked on his arm. David felt his breath catch, a strange lightness in his gut. He found himself smiling at the man, the lines around his eyes crinkling. He had a sudden urge to buy everyone ice cream.
