The fire crackled merrily in the hearth, casting dancing shadows on the walls of the cabin. A sense of peace enveloped Mark. He felt… buoyed up by the thought of his friend, Alex. The world felt kinder, softer somehow.

“Do you remember that hike, Alex?” Mark asked, tilting his head towards the flickering flames. “The one where we found that hidden waterfall? It was… breathtaking.”

Alex laughed, a deep rumble in his chest. “Waterfall? Mark, we didn't find a waterfall. We got completely lost, ran out of water, and almost had to call for a rescue. We were lucky to get back with only a few scratches."

Mark frowned, his brow furrowing. He could almost feel the spray on his face, the sound of the cascading water. “No, no, that’s not right. We were thrilled to find it. We spent hours there. We even took pictures.”

Alex stood and stretched, his silhouette dark against the fire. “Mark, no pictures exist of a waterfall because, again, there wasn't one. I remember the entire trip, every detail.”
