His breath hitched in his throat. He clutched his phone, his hand trembling slightly. He'd just gotten the offer! The promotion! Everything he’d worked for! He needed to tell someone right now. He quickly composed a text: “I did it! I got the promotion! I’m going to run the department!” He hit send, then froze. “Boss.”

He felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. This was terrible! He’d sent a celebratory text to his boss! He imagined the awkwardness of the next meeting, the uncertainty, the potential for disciplinary action. He winced, regretting his hasty message. He knew he had to apologize, to somehow explain his overzealous reaction. He dreaded the thought.
