He felt a buzz, an electric current that made his skin prickle. The promotion – it felt within his grasp. The air in his cubicle seemed suddenly charged with possibility. He reread the email invitation to the review board meeting, the words blurring slightly from the sudden rush of adrenaline.

His heart thumped a frenzied rhythm against his ribs. He couldn’t sit still. He stood, pacing the small confines of his workspace, a nervous energy propelling him. He needed to get out, breathe some fresh air.

Outside, the city seemed to shimmer, the buildings gleaming in the sunlight. He found himself grinning at strangers, his step lighter than usual. He had worked tirelessly, sacrificed evenings, and poured his heart into every project. This was validation. This was the reward.
