The constant hammering had become a background for her. It was relentless and unrelenting. She went to the medicine cabinet and popped a couple of aspirins. She had to, to take the edge off.

She watched the construction crew from her window. They moved with purpose, oblivious to the havoc they were wreaking on her peace of mind. Her chest felt constricted. The air in her own home had become thick and heavy.

She turned away, tears welling in her eyes. It was the lack of control, the feeling of being trapped, that was getting to her. She wanted to scream, but the words wouldn't come. She sunk onto the couch and closed her eyes, wishing, praying, for silence.
